For some people, getting to the gym before or after work just isn’t possible. Sometimes it’s too far, or their commute is too long to justify the time. Some people just don’t feel comfortable with using the gym. If any of these sound like you, it could be worth considering creating your own personal gym at home. It doesn’t have to be expensive as you can stock it within your budget, but it will make it easier for you to work out. If you think a home gym could be for you, you just need to follow these easy steps to create it.

CHOOSE YOUR SPACE

First things first, you need to find a room or section of a room within your home that will be suitable for the gym. A spare bedroom, garage, or even a large utilities cupboard are perfect. Remember that a home gym doesn’t necessarily have to take up an entire room, so you can still use the room for other purposes. You just may not want to use a space that is regularly used by other members of your household, such as the kitchen or living room, if you’d prefer your privacy when you work out.

DECIDE YOUR BUDGET

It doesn’t have to break the bank, once you’ve decided how much you have to spend, you can choose the equipment to fit your budget. DECORATE IT

If you’re lucky enough to be able to dedicate an entire room to your home gym, you’ll want to decorate it suitably. Bright, fresh colors are best to help you feel energized, and you’ll probably want to go for a hard-wearing flooring too. Make sure you include decorating in your budget to ensure you don’t overspend. Remember to install mirrors on the wall, so you can keep an eye on your technique and admire your progress while you work out.

STOCK IT

Once you’ve got the space and you’ve decorated it, you’ll want to start filling it with equipment. If you’re a regular gym bunny, you’ll exactly know what sort of equipment you enjoy using for your workouts. If not, most people would recommend you include kettlebells or dumbbells, a good quality mat, maybe a spin bike, and a rowing machine. You might want to also include a television or radio for entertainment while you work out.

ORGANIZE IT

Especially important if your choice of room is dual use, you need to make sure you install sufficient storage to keep it tidy, safe, and clean after you’ve finished your workout.

USE IT

You’re good to go! If you’re new to the gym thing, follow videos and read up on different workouts you can use with each piece of equipment. Be careful not to push yourself too far too fast as you could cause an injury. The best piece of advice is – make visiting your gym room part of your daily routine, and you’ll justify its installation almost straight away, no gym membership required.
